Present-Day Cybersecurity: Actual Challenges and Solution Directions

This blog presents the updated version of Jan van den Berg's holistic approach to cybersecurity, a framework that has also been adopted by the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security in their annual Cyber Security Assessment (CSAN) reports. Cybersecurity involves protecting data, networks, and systems from various threats such as hacking, data breaches, and other online dangers. This blog begins with a brief overview of the various activities and processes taking place in cyberspace today, using a holistic model of cyberspace to understand how these systems interact. Van den Berg also introduces a general framework for managing cyber risks. The discussion then shifts to recent cyber incidents, highlighting key challenges in securing cyberspace. Finally, he examines the current efforts by various actors in the digital space to enhance cybersecurity and the limitations of these initiatives. The blog concludes by outlining the necessary steps and solutions to strengthen security across all cyberspace domains and achieve an acceptable level of resilience.
